What Sort of Dental Problems Does Teeth Bonding Treat?

Composite resin is often used for repairing cavities as an alternative to amalgam fillings. But it can also be used to correct a variety of cosmetic flaws, including:

  • Chips and cracks

  • Minor gaps

  • Severe discolouration which can’t be lightened with tooth whitening

  • Teeth of uneven length

  • Misshapen teeth

  • Exposed tooth roots because of receding gums

How Does Composite Bonding Work?

Your dentist colour-matches the resin to your other teeth to achieve the most natural-looking smile. If you would like your bonding to be whiter than your other teeth this is absolutely possible and we typically whiten the other teeth first and then complete your bonding to match.

After a thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, a chemical roughening agent is applied to your teeth to improve the composite’s bonding strength. It also ensures that no enamel needs to be removed from the tooth’s surface.

The acrylic resin is applied in thin layers, then cured and hardened with a specialized light. Your dentist shapes and polishes your repaired tooth to help it blend seamlessly with your other teeth.

Composite bonding is typically performed without anaesthetic, but your dentist can administer a local anaesthetic to ease your dental anxiety.

This procedure is shorter than many other cosmetic procedures, lasting upwards from an hour, so that it can be completed in a single session. After that, all that’s left to do then is enjoy your new smile!

Your Composite Bonding Journey

1. Consultation

The first step on your treatment journey with our Composite Bonding Essex practices is an in-depth consultation. It helps us to assess your smile, allows us to look over your dental history, and ensures you can discuss your composite bonding treatment in advance.

2. Treatment

Composite bonding involves applying a putty-like, tooth-coloured resin to your smile, which is hardened under a UV light. The process is fast and painless, with lasting results. Some small preparation of the tooth surface is required, but the treatment isn’t considered invasive.

3. Aftercare

We are committed to dental excellence – so your dental care doesn’t end when we put down our tools. With this composite bonding it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene, attend regular check-ups, and avoid staining foods and drinks, as well as activities and habits which could potentially damage the resin e.g. chewing pen lids.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Composite Bonding last?

It depends on factors, such as how well it is cared for and the quality of the materials used. The aesthetic usually lasts five to ten years – but with good oral hygiene and avoiding bad habits e.g. nail biting, can last up to 15 years.

What is the treatment process?

First you’ll have a consultation to analyse the condition of your teeth, discuss the dental improvements you’d like and to confirm your suitability for treatment. If so, we can treat you in one of our Essex dental practices with the process streamlined so that it is completed in a single visit.

Can you get Composite Bonding on NHS?

Generally, dental treatments like Composite bonding are private treatments and therefore not covered by the NHS. Although it may cost a little more than an NHS treatment initially, it may be worth paying for the benefit of longer-lasting effects compared to some standard NHS treatments.

Is Composite Bonding better than veneers?

Bonding is a quick, relatively less expensive option for smaller fixes such as chips or cracks, but it does not last as long as veneers, which may require more investment in time and money. Veneers give you a long-term durability, but they are irreversible once put on your teeth.

Dislike your Composite Dental Bonding?

If you have had composite bonding and don’t like it, you can visit one of our Essex based practices, Dental Smiles Takeley, Dental Smiles Chelmsford or Dental Smiles Flagstaff to have the dental bonding assessed. We should then be able to remove and replace the previous dental work, or we can simply remove it (assuming the natural tooth surface underneath is untouched).

How do you remove Composite Bonding?

Most of the composite bonding work that people have will glow under a UV light. We can use a small UV light in your mouth to highlight the bonding and distinguish it from your natural teeth then we can carefully remove the composite whilst minimising damage to the natural tooth underneath the bond.

Patient Reviews

“Fantastic experience at Dental Smiles with Dr Andrew Sharpe. I started my Invisalign® journey in September and I am amazed at how incredible my teeth look. I also had teeth whitening and composite bonding. I always felt at ease at each appointment and all information given was clear and concise. All staff were welcoming and lovely too. I would highly recommend Dr Andrew Sharpe and Dental Smiles Chelmsford.”

Danielle Button

Dental Smiles is by far the best dental practice I have ever been to. It is also the best equipped; everything is state of the art. All the staff, receptionists, technicians, hygienists and dentists are friendly and helpful.
My front teeth were badly stained and chipped. Dr Katy Charlton fitted crowns and a bridge on the upper teeth, and composite fillings on the lower incisors. She did a brilliant job. I am not embarrassed to smile any more. Dental Smiles are definitely my dental practice from now on.
